It is sold by private insurance companies and helps pay for some of the out-of-pocket costs associated with Original Medicare, such as deductibles, copayments, coinsurance and other costs. There are 12 standardized Medicare supplement plans available in most states.

A:If you are enrolled in Medicare Part A and Part B and are 65 years or older, or have a qualifying disability, you are likely eligible to purchase Medicare supplement insurance. If you apply during your Medicare supplement insurance open enrollment period (a six month period starting the first day of the month you turn age 65), you cannot be denied coverage or charged more for your policy based on your health.
